About 'led tv stands'|What Kind of TV Should I Choose Plasma, LCD or LED
The 1953 film From Here to Eternity came in at number 52 on the American Film Institute (AFI) list of 100 greatest films of all time 1998. It also landed at number 20 on AFI's romantic films of 100 years, 100 passions. It fell off the top 100 AFI list in 2007. It was nominated for 13 Oscars and won 8 including best picture and best director for Fred Zinneman. I sat down and watched the DVD of this film and it stands up well after 50 years. The story follows three soldiers stationed in Hawaii, Robert E Lee Prewitt (Montgomery Clift), Milton Warden (Burt Lancaster) and Angelo Maggio (Frank Sinatra). Karen Holmes (Deborah Kerr) and Alma "Lorene" Burke (Donna Reed) are the women in their lives. It is based on the James Jones novel set on the eve of the attack on Pearl Harbor 1941 by the Japanese that led to World War II. Prewitt is an army base bugler who was also a former champion boxer. He decided that he would never fight again to the much discern of his new captain. Prewitt is bullied and punished by his superiors for not boxing. He meets Lorene who is a nightclub hostess and it is love at first sight. She has entertained many men in her life but nothing like Prewitt. She slowly lets her guard down and succumbs to his handsome demeanor. Milton is a sergeant who hates officers and one day meets Karen the wife of his boss. She is known as the woman who sleeps with officers. Their attraction for each other is electrifying. They soon begin a love affair that consumes them. The famous scene on that beach with the waves hitting their bodies is a revelation to see. Their love is passionate beyond anything that either never imagined. Yes, it is wrong because she is married and yes they try to find a way to be together. Even when they argue their love engulfs them. They are miserable and happy and miserable at their situation. Maggio is the best friend who connects with the lives of Prewitt and Milton. They drink, laugh and fight together on the base and in nightclubs. Their playground is the exotic Hawaiian locale. Their lives are full and troubling as most lives can be. Maggio then leaves guard duty and is sent to the stockade where he meets his fate. Their lives change in the following days when the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor. In one earth shattering moment their whole existence on that army base separates them all. Their fate is sealed as some lives begin and others end when World War II commences. My favorite scene in the whole movie is at the end. Karen and Lorene meet for the first time as they stand on the ship that will bring them to the United States. Karen throws two Hawaiian leis into the ocean. If they float to shore they will meet their lovers once more. If they float out to sea, they would never see them again. The two speak to each other and realize how close they really were through Prewitt and Milton. Harry Cohn was the head of the studio Columbia Pictures in 1952. He bought the rights to the James Jones novel and wanted a good cast for the film. He rejected everyone except Burt Lancaster. Ava Gardner who was married to Frank Sinatra claims in her autobiography AVA: My Story 1990 that she persuaded Harry Cohn to screen test Frank for the role of Maggio. Sinatra was by then a washed up singer and hadn't had a hit film in years. He landed the role and won the best supporting actor Oscar. Fred Zinneman claims in his book An Autobiography: A life in movies 1992 that Cohn hated Montgomery Clift whom he thought was a "queer." Fred wanted Clift for the role of Prewitt or he wouldn't direct the film. Cohn relented and sent Clift the script and he nabbed a best actor Oscar nomination. He lost the award to William Holden for his performance in Stalag 17 1953. Burt Lancaster was also nominated in the best actor category for his role as Milton. Donna Reed was under contract to Columbia and Cohn suggested her for the part of the hostess Lorene. Zinneman said okay after some reservations. Reed portrayed good girls on film and this was a role departure. The James Jones novel wrote Lorene as a prostitute. The censors of the 1950's demanded Lorene act as a nightclub hostess instead. Reed did so well that she won the best supporting actress Oscar. Many scoffed at Deborah Kerr who wanted the role of Karen. Zinneman stated in an interview that he wanted her because she was so against type that people would go and see what she did in the role. Up to that time she had only portrayed good and proper women on film. Kerr was so phenomenal that the performance brought her a best actress Oscar nomination. She lost the award to Audrey Hepburn for Roman Holiday 1953. In 1979 an NBC mini-series was made based on the same James Jones novel. Natalie Wood and William Devane portrayed the lead characters. The title stayed the same and the series delved deeper into the characters of the 800 page novel. It was a TV ratings hit for NBC. Natalie Wood was praised for her portrayal of Karen Holmes in which Kerr originated in the film. |
